Beast of Reincarnation Story & Setting: Japan, Year 4026
The confirmed story of Beast of Reincarnation: post-apocalyptic Japan in Year 4026, Emma's affliction, Koo the blighted dog, and the Beast at the end of it.
Game Freak has been unusually clear about why Emma and Koo are travelling, and unusually quiet about almost everything else. This page collects the story and setting details that are actually stated in official material — the Steam store description, the Xbox Developer Direct deep dive, and the State of Play release-date announcement — and marks the edges where the confirmed information stops.
The setting: Year 4026
The world is post-apocalyptic Japan, and the official copy gives it a date: Year 4026. That is far enough out that nothing about the present day survives intact, which is exactly what the screenshots show — wasteland punctuated by ruins and machinery.
The most distinctive thing Game Freak says about the world is that it is impermanent. The official phrasing is a world “where forests suddenly burst forth amidst the wasteland,” with ever-changing scenery. Take that literally: the environment is described as something that transforms, not a fixed set of biomes you tick off.
The thing corrupting it all is the blight. Official copy calls it a world “ravaged by blight,” and it is the connective tissue between the setting, the two protagonists, and the enemies you fight.
Emma: an outcast, because of what she carries
Emma is described as an outcast shunned from society for her affliction. Two things are worth pulling out of that short sentence:
- Her exclusion is social, not circumstantial. People pushed her out.
- The reason is an affliction — Game Freak’s word — which sits in the same vocabulary as the blight ravaging the world.
Alongside that, official copy states plainly that humanity’s only hope lies with Emma and Koo. So the outcast is also the last resort. That tension is the story’s premise, and it is the reason the marketing keeps pairing beauty with brutality.
Koo: the blighted dog
Koo is officially described as the blighted dog. Not a pet, not a summon — a second afflicted character. Game Freak’s pitch for the whole game is “one-person, one-dog action RPG,” and the emotional framing in official copy is specific: you are meant to feel moments of loneliness, offset by the reliability and comfort of your companion.
The store text also says that as the pair travel, their bond and abilities blossom — bond and capability are described together, which lines up with the progression systems and the hybrid combat where you issue Koo commands mid-fight.
The goal: capture Boss powers, reach the Beast
This is the clearest structural statement Game Freak has made about the campaign. Official copy says Emma and Koo met in the far east, and are tasked with battling Bosses from all over the world and capturing their powers in order to defeat the Beast of Reincarnation.
Three implications, all reasonable to read from that sentence:
- The Bosses are spread geographically, and the journey is the structure.
- Boss powers are taken and kept — progression is tied to encounters, not just menus.
- The title character is the endpoint, and you are expected to arrive underpowered and build toward it.

“A story filled with secrets”
The narrative framing in official copy is deliberately withholding, and worth quoting because of how strong it is: a brutal narrative where every character hides a dangerous truth, and an invitation to uncover the intertwined fates of Emma and Koo.
“Intertwined fates” is the line to watch. Emma is afflicted, Koo is blighted, and the game’s title is Beast of Reincarnation. Game Freak has connected those dots for nobody, and we are not going to pretend otherwise — but they have clearly signposted that the connection is the story.
